What Does It Take to Be a Certified Lifeguard?
Becoming a lifeguard is a noble and fulfilling role, requiring dedication, skill, and the ability to act quickly in emergencies. Here's what you need to become certified by the American Red Cross:
Age Requirements: You must be at least 15 years old to start lifeguard training.
Pre-course Test: This includes a swim test to demonstrate swimming proficiency, including a timed 300-yard swim, diving for and retrieving a 10-pound object, and treading water without hands for 2 minutes.
Certification Course: Successful completion of the Lifeguarding course, which includes First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and AED training. The course typically lasts 25-30 hours and culminates in both a written and a practical exam.
